Games companies often don't release the source code for old games due to several reasons: they might not have the source code anymore; the game may use third-party code or libraries; unclear ownership of the code; and the time and cost to resolve these issues may not be worth it. Additionally, companies may prefer to encourage sales of new games or re-releases over modding old ones.
